Eight

Simon was, at the same time, also sitting on a bench. He had his Walkman in his pocket. Leonard Cohen played melodic, mournful word games in his head. He had been sitting and watching for nearly three hours.

From the bench he had a view of the main entrance to the Gower Street buildings of RADA, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He felt the freshness of the air and pulled his jacket a little tighter as he shifted his position. His legs had gone slightly stiff and he stretched them out and felt momentary warmth as the circulation returned.

When he saw her, it took a full half-minute to register. His eyes were following different groups and at first he didn’t recognise that it was her, in one of the groups, with two other girls. There was nothing remarkable about the three of them, except that one of them was her!

They were chatting animatedly as they came out of the building. Now they were walking down towards the road. They stopped, still talking.

Instantly he sat up, straining to get a better view. There was no doubt it was her, no doubt at all. He stood, then sat down again. He didn’t have a plan. Incredible! He stood up again, swung his backpack on his shoulder and walked towards them, hurrying as he got closer, his strides faster, until he almost ran into them.

‘Sorry. Excuse me. Sorry…’ he stammered as he stopped himself abruptly in front of them. They turned towards him, a mixture of surprise and curiosity on their faces.

One of the other girls spoke with a sympathetic smile. ‘Can we help you? Are you lost?’ She had picked him for a stray tourist.

‘Ah… yes. I think… I’m looking for RADA. The main entrance? The theatres? Sorry, I’m not being very clear, am I? I’m looking for someone I know who’s studying acting here in London. I thought I might find them at RADA and so I’m just wondering if this is the right place and where to get in and where would be the best place to look.’

The girl who in Seville had worn the pink dress was now wearing light blue jeans and red sneakers and a white tee shirt. A dark blue jacket hung over her shoulders. She had exactly the same look of mild indifference Simon had noticed in Seville. ‘Actually,’ she said, ‘there’re a lot of people at RADA. What’s your friend’s name?’

Simon blushed.

‘Oh, well the truth is I don’t know her name. It’s a girl, I mean she’s a friend of a friend, sort of. Oh hell, I might as well be honest. Sorry. What I mean is… I’ve really been looking for you and I just saw you and I had to speak to you. I’m sorry… I don’t mean to… this is sounding really stupid isn’t it?’

‘I suppose, yes,’ she said. ‘Why were you looking for me?’

The other girls were still smiling. One of them glanced down at her watch. ‘Look, Lia, we’ve got to go.
